Vintage Clothing Trends Autumn/Winter 2009/2010 by Emma Brown
It’s that time of year once again, where the catwalks are drenched with sumptuous new designs for the season ahead. So what are we going to be wearing in the months ahead? We take a look at the best of the fashion trends for autumn and winter 2009/2010 and see what’s changed as we move on a decade from the naughties to the tens. We also give you some top tips on how, with a bit of imagination and time, you can create the prefect on-trend looks using decadent and individual vintage clothing.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen such a conscious and definitive correlation between the catwalk trends and our social and political position. Driven by the global economic disaster, we are presented with more muted tones and classic shapes that give our clothing a broader appeal and longer shelf life.
Autumn is a great time of year, it gives us the opportunity to start layering again, giving more scope for mix and match items. Colour wise we see that a whole spectrum of indigos are going to be huge. Think deep metallic majolica blues, iron greys and lavender lilacs mixed with shimmering mauves and deep cool teals. For the remaining palette we see beautiful diluted floral tones, think burnt sienna, warm olive, honey yellow and crème brulee. There is no doubt that we can find these tones in vintage clothing. For the more muted bohemian tones we look towards the seventies for vintage dresses and vintage blouses. For the more extreme indigo moods we turn to the eighties with sequins, padding and shimmer. Eighties vintage clothing is brimming with ultra glam purples, blues and greens with as much sparkle and drama as you can shake a stick at, you just need to know where to look.
Some of the more obvious links between the autumn 2009 trends and vintage clothing come from the big return of leather, velvet and tweed.
Leather – From the bike to the boardroom, this season leather really gets grown up with skirt suits, fitted midi jackets and trench coats. Adapt this in your vintage wardrobe with all manner of vintage leathers, let your imagination be your only restriction!
Tweed – Tweed has been reborn before, only this time we see a real urban edge. Think mod styling and large vintage accessories i.e. oversize monochrome tweed vintage blazers with bold tights, vintage leather belts and large shopper style handbags.
Velvet – For velvet we say bye bye to naff-ville and hello to clever shades of ruby, emerald, sapphire and gold. Combine this with luxurious jewel details and you have one of the hottest party looks for the Christmas season ahead. Slashing, buttons and drapes are all key features so keep your eyes peeled for the more unusual and head turning vintage items that can be brought back to life decades on.
The starring role on the catwalks this season had to be the shoulders. Keeping bottom half silhouettes short and narrow for femininity, shoulders were anything from pointy to boxy, humped to flowing and everything in-between. For a gentle take on the extreme styles, try sixties and seventies vintage clothing for soft and billowing sleeves as demonstrated by Dolce & Gabbana. For hardcore power dressing head straight for the eighties vintage dresses, vintage coats and vintage blouses for Marc Jacobs and Zac Posen type bellowing shapes.
And lest we forget, we have seen yet another super trashy eighties revival on the recent catwalks. Designers from Louis Vuitton to Michael Kors resuscitated the eighties for us which is great news for vintage clothing lovers worldwide! This time round think Alexis Carrington on acid with plenty of room for tight lycra, puffballs, shoulder padding, lame, peplums, huge knitwear and one shoulder styles. All, of course, sprinkled with that magical eighties glitter. Tacky is most definitely the new classy. When looking for eighties vintage clothing, don’t be afraid of animal prints, wet looks, and bright corals!
So there we have it, all you need to know about the latest fashion trends, and how to start looking at vintage for them. You’ll be surprised at how easy it becomes with a little practice…. And remember to stay vintage and stay gorgeous.
